LIP Nautic 666 - R26

the diver from hell

With such a number at the bottom of the dial, users of the Nautic 666 diver's watch designed by LIP for the North American market at the very end of the 1960s were quick to nickname it the “Devil Diver”.

Without in any way detracting from the emotional tension that helped establish this timepiece's notoriety, enthusiasts a little worried about its patronymic will recall that the number displayed at the bottom of the dial is not a satanic reference, but corresponds in American feet to the maximum depth that this timepiece can reach, which is 200 meters.

At the time, Fred Lip, who stopped at nothing when it came to disruptive communication, dared to affix this technical information to the dial of the Nautic 3, whereas competing brands forbade it out of superstition.

This figure with its strong connotations has largely contributed to the legend of this model, which specialists know to have been little distributed in its day, and which collectors of the French manufacture therefore assiduously seek out.

Heritage and innovation

A tribute to those who brave the depths

At the time, the Lip Nautic 666 was powered by a Felsa 4007N automatic caliber and displayed the time on luminescent-filled hands.

This year, this rarity returns to the LIP Manufacture movement collection. Adorned with a 39 mm diameter 316L stainless steel case, it features a unidirectional rotating bezel with a black, blue, or gray anodized aluminum insert that reflects the graphics of the original model, complete with time indications for divers.

Nautical universe

In the breath of
the depths

Contemporary in design, it now includes a transparent screw-down case back that reveals the high-end finishes of the R26 caliber. This is the first automatic movement from the Besançon House since Fred Lip.

Designed for action, the Nautic 666 is offered in various finishes and can be worn according to preference on a 'Tropic' type elastomer strap or on a robust and flexible stainless steel bracelet secured with a safety deployment clasp. Original and sporty, it is individually numbered for this reason, though it is not produced in a limited series.

Powered by the Caliber R26

Redesigned in-house with the collaboration of the Besançon engineering school, SupMicroTech, it boasts a power reserve of 42 hours when fully wound, a hacking second hand, and a date display.

With over 70% French value in terms of production, its balance wheel oscillates at 3 Hertz, or 21,600 beats per hour, and it features the LIP logo on its gear bridge and oscillating weight, which appear to overlap enchantingly with its oscillations. Fully assembled, cased, and inspected by the master watchmakers at LIP's Besançon workshops, its gear bridge, balance, and oscillating weight screws are specifically hexagonal to emphasize its French heritage.
